Over the course of the year, special funding needs arise at our shelter and school. Sometimes they are unexpected, other times they are already in the budget. These make up our special projects, which can connect you to a part of our program that especially resonates with you.
Please note that we typically can't accept material donations due to overseas shipping costs. However, if you are in the Philippines and have an item that fills a need, we'd be happy to receive your gift.
In the event we raise more than is needed for a particular project, we will apply the excess to the general needs of our ministry to children. Thank you for looking over these unique ways to love our kids!
Sometimes our children get so sick that they need to be hospitalized. We also have children that require surgeries and medicial procedures. This year, we have a few children needing hospitalizations. We have three children, Mary Irene, Matthew Justin and Rovelito, who were burned prior coming to CSC. They all sustained severe burns that require multiple surgeries. Thomas has neurological issues that will require further hospitalizations in the coming months.
It obviously takes a lot to power our school and shelter and all of our buildings. We do our best to reduce electricity, turning off lights when not in use, using windows and skylights for lighting when possible and very minimal use of air conditioning. (Only a few rooms in all of our buildings even have air conditioning!) Giving to this special project provides the power to wash the clothes, keep the food cold in the refrigerators and keep the light on for caregivers in the nursery rocking babies in the middle of the night. Thank you!
Lab and Medical Supplies
Our infirmirary is well stocked and we work hard to make sure that our staff have all the labratory and medical supplies we need to take care of the children. This includes all manner of equipment, even down to things like adhesive bandages, thermometers and catheters for our residents in wheelchairs who are incontinent.
Doctor Visits › a month of visits : $300
CSC has a great medical staff, but occasionally we have to take a child to the doctor. In fact, each month, we spend an average of $300 on visits to the doctor. We currently have a few children with severe medical conditions that will require extra medicl appointments.
Feed The Kids › Day of Food : $234
Many children arrive from situations in which they were begging, looking through the dump for food or things to sell or relying on a few grains of rice as their only nutrition. New children that come to CSC often don't know when to stop eating during their first few meals. They are accustomed to having so little that they gorge themselves until they begin to trust that meal time is consistent and reliable.
We provide 3 healthy meals a day, 365 days a year. The cost to feed each child is $2.60 per day. To feed all 90 children on any given day, the cost is $234 per day. That means in a typical month, it costs $7,254 to feed all the kids at CSC.
Will you help us feed these kids?
High School Tuition
Most CSC kids attend our Children of Hope School. But eventually the older students need to go to a school in Cebu City that offers higher grade levels. These teens are some of our high school students. This special project goes to help cover the cost of their tuition.
School Uniforms : $20
In the Philippines, school uniforms are the norm. In fact, even some colleges require them of their students. At CSC's Children of Hope School, uniforms are a part of the routine as well. Our teachers wouldn't feel like they were at school if the staff and children didn't have uniforms on! Each day the students wear the same color uniform: a simple t-shirt with black shorts. We see a lot of value in this. The uniforms are a simple way of showing the school day is here, and it's time for the kids to get to work on their important job of learning. Thanks for helping provide them!
Most, if not all of the children that come to our shelter need dental work. Some children never owned a toothbrush before coming to CSC. We work with the children to teach proper dental care. We also have volunteer dentists who occasionally come to the shelter to provide free dental work. Currently, we have a few residents who have such severe dental problems that it is recommended that we set them up for regular dental care. Meriam and Michael are two of those kids. It is not that they need straight teeth for a nice smile. Rather, they need on-going dental work to repair years of damage. Among other things they have extra teeth, missing teeth, and teeth in the wrong places. This project helps to cover regular dental work for all of the children at the shelter, along with some extra help for a few of our residents.
The Outreach department at CSC is one of the unique areas of our ministry that doesn't always get a lot of press, but is very important. We have a Social Worker assigned to working with families who have been served by CSC in the past. These include those in which a child came to live with us temporarily, and then went back home. This this program touches those families that still need help. This fund also helps families in our community who have experienced a trajedy and need help to get back on their feet. Your gift to this project helps those in the community around our shelter.
Birthday Parties › Single party : $28
We take birthdays seriously! Each child gets a celebration for their big day, which includes their favorite meal, a couple small gifts, and a few personally invited friends from the other houses. One of the highlights is always when the child selects a staff member to pray just for them on their birthday.
This is an important opportunity for us to make sure each child knows that they are loved. It takes $28 to provide for the festivities. Please consider joining us in making each birthday special.
Medicine › A week of medications : $327
Every week, we distribute over $300 worth of medicine to our kids! This is simply a part of providing for the number of children in our care, many of whom are dealing with unique medical issues because of their backgrounds. This amount covers standard medicine for typical childhood illnesses such as ear infections, pink eye, tapeworms, asthma and many others, as well as daily medicine for children with severe medical conditions.
Immunizations › covers for one child : $142
As you can imagine, the kids that come to CSC often need updated immunizations and sometimes may not have received any vaccines, as their birth family may not have been able to provide them. CSC values the medical needs of each child and ensures that children are caught up on their needed vaccinations up on admission and throughout their stay.
Forex Shipping › One box shipped : $130
Not long ago at CSC, we were unable to take most donations of items in the US office. The costs to ship via overseas simply outweighed the value of the items given. Having staff and visitors bring items on airlines is also becoming costly. Then we found Forex. We are able to ship items to Cebu in a large box with no weight limit, and they arrive in about 6-8 weeks. We're able to send clothes, school supplies and Barbies!
This project is a little different than others on the list. If you follow this link to Amazon you can purchase items directly for Cebu. No need to donate via the "donate now" button below...you can select the items you'd like to give! Thanks so much for considering this way to support the children.
Childcare Employee Wages
Childcare is naturally, the single biggest portion of the CSC budget. This is what we do: care for children! Childcare workers are the front line employees who care for the kids we all love. You can help make sure that there is a loving smile and comforting words for the next child who needs to hear them.
Rice Gift › Per employee : $40
Poverty is a common situation in the Philippines. Due to this struggle, many of our Filipino staff members end up providing for their extended family members. This is a big burden to carry. In order to support our staff we are giving each Filipino employee a large bag of rice as a Christmas gift! Rice is eaten with every meal in the Philippines so this is a significant gift. A donation to this special project will provide this important staple to employees and their families.
We have been using the same computer for almost 10 years and we need a new one to edit pictures and videos and upload info to our donors all over the world! Giving to this project helps provide a much needed new computer for this purpose.
Outings › A night out : $50
Our kids spend a lot of time at the shelter. That's okay, there's a lot to do there. They have school just up the road, and lots of friends and activities to keep them busy within the confines of our walls. But, it's also good to take them out for a special night occasionally. Typically, one or two staff members will take out a group of boys or girls who are close in age. This could be bowling, a movie, the arcade...any of the same things you might do for a special night with your family. You can help us provide these outings!
When children come to CSC, they are often have experienced malnourishment. We provide healthy meals and snacks at the shelter, but the children benefit from taking regular multi-vitamins. Vitamin C tablets can also boost the immunity of the children, who have often have been struggling with multiple health conditions. As you can imagine, we go through bottles of vitamins in a pretty intense rate. If we have 95 children at the shelter and they each take a multi-vitamin once a day, that is 34,675 vitamins each year!
By supporting this special project, you will be helping to supply these needed supplements!
If you have access to large quantities of vitamins for donation, please contact Jill at the US office.
